Working Conditions Aboard the Wight-Ryder-1

On the morning of June 26, 2025, Wightlink's FastCat service faced disruptions due to a radar malfunction aboard the vessel 'Wight Ryder I'. The radar issue led to the cancellation of the 7:15 a.m. departure from Portsmouth Harbour and the 7:45 a.m. sailing from Ryde Pier Head. Passengers were left uncertain about the status of subsequent crossings as the company worked to resolve the technical difficulties.

On November 20, 2012, Wightlink announced the cancellation of several passenger sailings due to technical difficulties affecting the 'Wight Ryder I'. The specific sailings impacted were the 10:10 a.m. and 11:10 a.m. departures from Ryde, along with the 10:40 a.m. crossing from Portsmouth on the Ryde to Portsmouth FastCat service. In response, Wightlink arranged for a charter vessel to ensure service continuity, operating on the 8:40 a.m. and 9:40 a.m. routes from Portsmouth, as well as the 9:10 a.m. sailing from Ryde. Additionally, extra sailings were scheduled for 10:15 a.m. from Portsmouth Harbour and 10:47 a.m. from Ryde Pier Head, enabling passengers to have alternative travel options during the disruptions.

In the early hours of October 6, 2012, the Wight Ryder 1 experienced a significant power failure while departing from Portsmouth Harbour, resulting in the vessel colliding with a buoy. Passengers onboard the catamaran were promptly returned to port as the vessel lost steering capability and struck a four-bar buoy located at the harbour's entrance. Fortunately, all passengers disembarked safely before marine engineers boarded the craft to assess the situation. Thankfully, there were no injuries reported. While the engineering team conducted thorough checks on the engines, the exact cause of the power loss remains undetermined.
