31-Year-Old Crew Member Taken into Custody for Child Pornography Offenses Aboard World Explorer

Sep 13, 2024 11:43

In a disconcerting incident near Iqaluit, Nunavut, the Royal Canadian Mounted Police (RCMP) apprehended Akshay Somaroo, a 31-year-old crew member from Mauritius, onboard the cruise ship 'World Explorer.' This arrest occurred during routine customs inspections conducted in collaboration with the Canada Border Services Agency (CBSA) and Fisheries and Oceans Canada officers in Frobisher Bay. While the officers were performing standard procedures, a search of Somaroo revealed possession of child pornography, leading to his immediate detention. The crew member has not yet entered a plea concerning the charges of possession and importation. He is set to face the Nunavut Court of Justice on September 11, 2024. This incident marks the 17th arrest of a cruise ship employee on similar grounds within the past seven months, raising concerns about security and safety within the maritime industry. World Explorer Alters Itinerary Due to Severe Weather Conditions

Sep 17, 2019 11:24

On September 14, 2019, the cruise ship 'World Explorer' set sail from Hamburg with a planned itinerary including calls at Amrum, List, and Heligoland. However, adverse weather conditions, including stormy seas and malfunctions with the vessel’s stabilizers, forced the ship to skip its scheduled stops at List and Amrum. The situation escalated, preventing the 'World Explorer' from tendering passengers in Heligoland as originally intended. As a contingency, the ship diverted to Esbjerg, successfully docking there on September 16 at 9 a.m. Some passengers disembarked, while one individual sustained a minor injury after falling from his bunk due to the rough seas, which reached swells of four meters. Following its unscheduled stop in Esbjerg, the 'World Explorer' continued its journey, arriving in Bremerhaven on September 17 at 8 a.m., and ultimately returning to Hamburg on September 18.

Delivery Delays Continue for World Explorer Ahead of Inaugural Voyage

Jul 29, 2019 13:39

The much-anticipated delivery of the 'World Explorer' has faced yet another setback, this time attributed to ongoing issues with the ship's interior. Currently docked in Viana do Castelo, the vessel remains on standby with its crew awaiting the final delivery process. Initially scheduled to embark on its maiden voyage from Kiel on July 28, 2019, the launch was canceled and rescheduled to depart from Bremerhaven on July 31, with Reykjavik as its intended destination. Unfortunately, this revised schedule also fell through, forcing the cancellation of calls at Gothenburg and Bergen. Affected passengers were provided a partial refund of 75% for their disrupted travel plans. Originally set for delivery on May 2, hopes were pinned on having the ship ready by August 5. Notably, the ship was officially christened on April 6 at the Porto shipyard by the renowned Carla Bruni.
