Issaquah Battles High Waves During Transit to Anacortes

Jan 12, 2024 20:55

On January 9, 2024, the car ferry 'Issaquah' faced unexpectedly high wave conditions while navigating north along the coastline of Whidbey Island after departing Port Townsend. Traveling at 17 knots, the vessel encountered rough seas upon rounding Fort Ebey, prompting the crew to reduce speed to seven knots and execute a zig-zag course change as it made its way to Anacortes from its original route at Mukilteo. During this transit, the 'Issaquah' was required to traverse the eastern segment of the Strait of Juan de Fuca. While no passengers were on board at the time, the crew's vehicles fell victim to the car deck flooding caused by the turbulent waters. Fortunately, the ferry managed to navigate out of the strait and into calmer waters, reaching its destination safely by 12:45 p.m., approximately two hours after entering the Strait. The incident resulted in minimal damage, and the ferry services remained unaffected. For further insights, check out the report with video coverage at Maritime Executive.

Quick Rescue: Ferry Crew Saves Man Overboard within Minutes

A dramatic rescue unfolded on October 31, 2014, when the ferry 'Issaquah' swiftly responded to a 'man overboard' emergency as it approached Vashon Island. Passengers watched in concern as a middle-aged man was spotted struggling in the water, attempting the backstroke to keep himself afloat. The dedicated crew sprang into action, deploying an inflatable boat to reach him. Remarkably, they retrieved the man within just two minutes and immediately began administering treatment for hypothermia. The circumstances surrounding how he ended up in the water remain unclear, but the crew's quick response undoubtedly saved his life.
