Allegations Rise Against CSL Australia for Underpayment of Foreign Crew on Bahamas-Flagged Vessel

Dec 21, 2017 10:10

CSL Australia, an Australian maritime firm, is facing serious allegations regarding the underpayment of foreign seafarers operating aboard the MV Diana, a Bahamas-flagged vessel navigating Australian coastal waters. The International Transport Workers’ Federation (ITF) conducted an inspection of the MV Diana in Melbourne, revealing that Filipino crew members are reportedly not receiving adequate compensation despite working full-time on domestic routes. According to the ITF, regulations established in 2012 require that foreign crew members be paid award rates when operating more than two domestic voyages within Australian waters. However, the findings of the recent inspection indicate that these maritime workers are instead receiving significantly lower FOC wages, raising concerns about fair labor practices in the region. The MV Diana is part of the Canadian Shipping Lines (CSL) Australia fleet. The ITF notes that CSL has been increasingly relying on foreign personnel, replacing local Australian seafarers and potentially jeopardizing employment conditions within Australia’s coastal shipping sector. Dean Summers, ITF Australia Coordinator, emphasized, "Under Australian law, all foreign crew members must be remunerated at award rates when engaging in local trade operations. ITF Australia has uncovered evident exploitation of Filipino seafarers linked to CSL. We have reached out to the Fair Work Ombudsman (FWO) for further investigation, but we are still awaiting a reply. These vulnerable workers are being utilized by an Australian company in place of Australian nationals who are traditionally engaged in the local maritime operations," Summers stated.

CSL Group Expands Fleet with Acquisition of Handysize Bulker DIANA ISLAND

Jul 18, 2017 09:38

CSL Group, a prominent maritime company based in Canada, has made a strategic acquisition by purchasing the handysize bulk carrier DIANA ISLAND, previously controlled by a Japanese owner, Yahata Trader. The deal, finalized for $8.5 million, secures the seven-year-old vessel, which boasts a deadweight tonnage of 28,398 dwt. This marks CSL's second handysize purchase this year, following their acquisition of the 2006-built vessel Cape Knox for $7.4 million back in April. The addition of DIANA ISLAND strengthens CSL's fleet in a competitive market, showcasing their commitment to growth and expansion in the shipping industry.
