Collision of Container Ships on Kiel Canal Disrupts Maritime Traffic
On February 6, 2025, at 7:05 a.m., a maritime incident unfolded on the Kiel Canal involving two container vessels: the 'Essence' (IMO: 9491496) and the 'X-Press Mülhacen.' The 'Essence,' which was traveling from Kotka to Rotterdam, collided with the 'X-Press Mülhacen,' en route from Rotterdam to Gdynia, in the foggy vicinity of the northern port of Kiel, just before the Holtenau locks. The 'X-Press Mülhacen' was preparing to enter the large north chamber of the Holtenau locks, while the 'Essence' was navigating from the south chamber. Their close proximity led to a scrape that interrupted both vessels' journeys. Following the incident, the 'Essence' docked at the Schwartenbek siding near Suchsdorf for an inspection. Meanwhile, the 'X-Press Mülhacen' continued to the roadstead of Holtenau, where it anchored at position 54° 23' N 010° 11' E at 8:50 a.m. The Kiel water police promptly deployed the police boat 'Stör' to the scene, conducting interviews with the vessels' crews and onboard pilots. Classification experts assessed the condition of both ships, confirming their technical safety. The 'Essence' resumed its voyage around 11 a.m., eventually heading to Brunsbüttel and arriving at the Navy dolphins shortly after 6 p.m. It set sail again on February 7 at 4 a.m. UTC, with a revised ETA for its final destination on February 8. In contrast, the 'X-Press Mülhacen' remained anchored in the Kiel Fjord until 8:20 p.m. before continuing its journey towards Gdynia, with an ETA updated for February 7.
Storm-Damaged Cargo Ship Denied Entry to Zeebrugge Port
On August 31, 2012, at approximately 03:50 a.m., the cargo vessel 'Flintercarrier' encountered severe weather approximately 25 kilometers west of Goeree. Powerful wind gusts caused two deck containers to topple onto the windlass, rendering the ship unable to anchor safely. In light of the situation, the crew made the decision to head toward Zeebrugge for assistance. However, upon arrival, local authorities denied the vessel permission to enter the port due to the storm damage. As a result, the 'Flintercarrier' made its way back to Rotterdam, its departure point from Prins Wellem Alexander Port on August 30 at 11:30 p.m. The ship's crew intended to assess and conduct necessary repairs on the damaged deck after the delay in securing port access at Zeebrugge.
