Hapag-Lloyd's Successful Transport of 42 Metro Trains to Peru
In a significant logistics achievement, Hapag-Lloyd has commenced the transport of 42 state-of-the-art metro trains destined for Lima, Peru. The journey began with the loading of a train composed of six cars in Salerno, Italy, aboard the vessel 'Cerinthus'. This critical operation marks the first step in a project set to deliver a total of 252 modern, driverless metro cars by February 2019. After departing from Salerno, the 'Cerinthus' will navigate an approximately 29-day journey to the Peruvian port of Callao. Once the trains arrive, they will be transferred to the capital Lima using specialized low-loader trucks. Each metro car measures 17.6 meters in length and weighs 35 tonnes, underlining the complexity of this intricate transport operation. The preparation for this extensive shipment began nearly six months ago, showcasing the collaborative effort of Hapag-Lloyd’s Special Cargo Team in Hamburg and local specialists in Italy. Thorsten Haeser, Chief Commercial Officer at Hapag-Lloyd, stated, “Our company has a wealth of experience in managing out-of-gauge cargo transport. This project reaffirms our ability to handle complex logistics challenges successfully.” The total estimated value of the metro trains stands at approximately half a billion US dollars, emphasizing the significance of this operation both for Hapag-Lloyd and for the infrastructure development in Peru.
