In the early hours of October 24, 2021, a significant maritime incident occurred in the Marmara Sea involving the bulk carrier 'BC Vanessa' (IMO: 9426855) and the vessel 'Benitamou'. The collision transpired around 03:10 a.m. while both ships were navigating through dense fog en route to the Dardanelles; the location of the incident was approximately midway between Sarkoy, Tekirdag, and Gelibolu, Canakkale. The 'BC Vanessa' struck the 'Benitamou' on its port side, resulting in extensive damage that caused a considerable breach and subsequent water ingress within the 'Benitamou'. Notably, the bow and forecastle sections of the 'BC Vanessa' also sustained severe damage. Following the collision, the 'BC Vanessa' managed to moor at Sevketiye anchorage for safety. In response to the incident, the Coastal Safety authority promptly deployed several tugboats, including 'Nazim Tur', 'Kurtarma 4', 'Kurtarma 15', and 'Seren 2', to assist at the scene of the accident. At the time of the collision, the 'Benitamou' was loaded with iron ore and was traveling from Yuzhny to China, while the 'BC Vanessa' was en route from Varna to Tunis.
