In a notable maritime incident, a Dutch-registered containership, the Flevodijk, weighing 9,983 tons, collided with a pier in the scenic oceanfront park located at the base of the Akashi-Kaikyo Bridge in Kobe early Friday morning. Authorities, including local police and coast guard officials, reported that the vessel left a significant 2-meter gash in the pier and knocked down a safety fence surrounding the area. According to investigators, a 26-year-old Ukrainian crew member who was on watch at the time confessed to falling asleep during his shift. The Flevodijk was en route from China to the port of Osaka when the incident occurred at approximately 4:40 a.m., with the ship operating on autopilot.
