In a notable maritime incident, the container ship 'YM Unicorn', while navigating from Kaohsiung, ran aground on December 12, 2024, around 3:20 a.m. CST. The vessel encountered difficulties as it approached the port of Keelung, grounding itself near the red lighthouse at Dikou after straying from its intended path for reasons still under investigation. Keelung's traffic control center quickly mobilized three tugboats to assist the stranded vessel. A report from the pilot indicated that the ship's forepeak tank sustained damage, resulting in water ingress. In an effort to expedite the rescue operation, an additional four tugs were deployed. Thanks to their combined efforts, 'YM Unicorn' was successfully freed within a swift 20 minutes and ultimately docked at Keelung West No. 19 pier by 4:35 a.m. An investigation has been launched to determine the exact circumstances surrounding the grounding.
