In an exciting development for the maritime industry, Seaspan Corporation has proudly announced the addition of the YM Wind, a state-of-the-art 14,000 TEU containership, to its esteemed fleet. This cutting-edge vessel will begin a long-term charter with Yang Ming Marine Transport Corp., spanning ten years with the option to extend for an additional two years. Constructed at the renowned CSBC Corporation in Taiwan, the YM Wind marks the ninth ship built under the 14,000 TEU SAVER design, enhancing Seaspan's operational capacity to a remarkable total of 89 vessels. In conjunction with this acquisition, Seaspan has engaged in a sale leaseback arrangement for the YM Wind, generating approximately $144 million in gross proceeds. This strategic move underscores Seaspan's commitment to expanding its fleet while optimizing its financial positioning.
Yang Ming Expands Fleet with Charter of New 14,000-TEU Vessels
In a strategic move to enhance its fleet capabilities, Taiwanese shipping giant Yang Ming has announced the chartering of two state-of-the-art 14,000-TEU vessels. The vessels, YM Wind and YM Wreath, will be leased from Hong Kong-based Seaspan and GC Intermodal Operating (HK) Limited, respectively. This initiative aims to not only expand Yang Ming's operational capacity but also to modernize its fleet by lowering the average age of its ships. The official naming ceremony for these new ships took place on May 18 at Taiwan's esteemed CSBC Kaohsiung Shipyard, with representatives from Yang Ming highlighting the significance of this addition to the company's competitive edge in the maritime industry. "With the deployment of these new vessels, Yang Ming gains additional strength in the competitive market," the company emphasized in a recent statement. Both vessels will operate within the framework of THE Alliance, Yang Ming's collaboration with Hapag-Lloyd of Germany and Japanese shipping giants NYK, MOL, and "K" Line. These ships are the final additions of five vessels currently being constructed for Yang Ming, signifying a major step forward in its fleet expansion strategy. Furthermore, both the YM Wind and YM Wreath will be managed by Seaspan, ensuring high operational standards and efficiency.
