In a recent episode of nature's fury, the 14,000 TEU container ship YM WIND was swept away during Typhoon Meranti, leading to significant destruction in Taiwan's port infrastructure. Taiwan Unveils High-Capacity Container Ships: A New Era in Maritime Trade

May 11, 2016 09:56

On May 5, Taiwan marked a significant milestone in its maritime industry with the introduction of two cutting-edge container ships, the YM Window and YM Width, developed and constructed by the state-supported CSBC Corporation. These impressive vessels, launched in the bustling southern port city of Kaohsiung, stretch an impressive 368 meters in length and 51 meters in width, with an incredible capacity to transport 14,198 twenty-foot equivalent units (TEUs) of cargo. For context, a standard 40-foot container, which is commonly used in global shipping, equates to approximately two TEUs. According to CSBC Chairman Lai Sun-quae, this next-generation fleet represents a remarkable advancement from the company's previous batch of ten container ships, which were built between 2011 and 2015 and had a capacity of about 8,000 TEUs. "The Window and Width are designed to be quieter and more fuel-efficient," stated Lai. "They’re also easier to operate and can cruise at an impressive speed of 23.3 nautical miles per hour, matching the capabilities of South Korean competitors in the industry." With this launch, Taiwan is poised to enhance its position in the global shipping landscape, offering more efficient solutions for international trade.
