YM Wish Container Ship Runs Aground on Elbe River
In a maritime incident on July 31, 2015, at approximately 9 a.m., the container ship "YM Wish" experienced engine failure shortly after departing from Hamburg headed for Rotterdam. The vessel was navigating through the Elbe River when it ran aground at the northern tip of the Rhinplate near Glückstadt. The "YM Wish," which has a draught of 11.90 meters, promptly dropped anchors as per the instructions from the pilot and captain. To facilitate rescue efforts, several tugboats including "Bugsier 9," "Wolf," "Parat," and "Wal", along with the multipurpose vessel "Neuwerk" and the police launch "Amerikahöft," were mobilized for assistance. Following successful towing operations, the ship arrived safely at the Elbe Port in Brunsbüttel for inspections at 3:20 p.m. This incident highlights the challenges of navigating busy waterways and the importance of prompt action during emergencies.
Yang Ming's Maiden Voyage Kicks Off Operations at Greece's Piraeus Container Terminal
Taiwan-based Yang Ming Lines, a prominent player in the container shipping industry, has made significant strides this week by sealing a partnership with Cosco’s affiliate, Piraeus Container Terminal (PCT), located in Greece’s largest port. This strategic alliance positions PCT as a vital transshipment hub for operations across the Mediterranean and Black Sea regions. The inaugural vessel for this route, the Yang Ming Wish, a modern container ship with a capacity of 14,000 TEUs, docked at Piraeus. This ship, which recently completed its maiden voyage ceremony on April 16, 2015, is a chartered asset from Seaspan Corporation and marks the first of a series of 15 new vessels intended to enhance Yang Ming's Mediterranean operations. Representing Yang Ming in Greece is Arkas Hellas, led by Aurette Arkas, who announced plans for four weekly departures and arrivals. These shipments will subsequently be transshipped using smaller vessels to connect with ports in the Far East, alongside two additional sailings dedicated to servicing the largest North European ports.
Yang Ming Launches First 14,000 TEU Container Ship in Kaohsiung
On April 20, Yang Ming Marine Transport Corp, Taiwan's second-largest container shipping company, officially commenced operations of its inaugural 14,000 twenty-foot-equivalent units (TEU) vessel at Kaohsiung Harbor. The new vessel, named YM Wish, stands as the largest in Yang Ming's existing fleet. The company is set to enhance its operations further, with plans to receive an additional 14 vessels by the end of next year, courtesy of a leasing agreement with Seaspan Corp, a prominent independent container ship owner based in Canada. At a ceremony celebrating the maiden voyage, Yang Ming’s chairman, Frank Lu, highlighted that the addition of these state-of-the-art vessels is a pivotal step toward fleet modernization. The newly acquired ships promise to lower operational expenses and improve fuel efficiency, with potential annual savings estimated at NT$6 billion (approximately US$191.98 million). This year's savings alone are projected to reach NT$2 billion, Lu noted. Furthermore, the introduction of these vessels will enable Yang Ming to strengthen its services on routes from the Far East to Europe, positioning the company competitively within the ultra-large vessel segment. Post integration of the new vessels, Yang Ming may shift several 8,000-TEU ships currently servicing European routes to enhance its footprint in the U.S. market.
