Freighter Collides with Gas Platform Near Ravenna
In an incident that unfolded shortly after the 'Zaanborg' departed from Ravenna on the evening of January 15, 2020, the vessel collided with the ENI gas platform 'Agip 1', located approximately 3.5 nautical miles from the port. Following the accident, the freighter returned to Ravenna, docking at the Porto Corsini Cruise Terminal at 2:50 PM. The harbor master promptly detained the ship for an investigation into the incident. Authorities questioned both the captain and the first officer regarding potential violations of articles 1123 and 1231 of the Navigation Code. The Wagenborg shipping company has engaged two Italian lawyers for their defense concerning the event. The cause of this allision remains unclear, although it is notable that the ship had a port pilot on board at the time of the incident. Initially, visibility was good, but conditions deteriorated after the vessel's departure. As of January 18, the 'Zaanborg' was still docked, and the gas platform was not in operation at the time of the collision. Inspections of the platform were scheduled for January 18, while the extent of damage from the allision was still being assessed. Fortunately, there were no reports of pollution as a result of the impact. The 'Zaanborg' sustained severe damage to its portside forecastle area and bow tip, including a breach several meters long, deep scratches, and dents. To address these hull damages, the vessel entered the Rosetti Marino SpA Yard in Ravenna-Piombino at 5 PM on January 20 for repairs. The freighter resumed its journey on February 18 at 3:45 PM, heading towards Bandirma, where it docked from February 22 to 23, before continuing to Piraeus, with an estimated time of arrival on February 24.
