Norilsk Nickel's Zapolarniy Completes Historic Northern Sea Route Voyage Without Icebreaker

Oct 11, 2011 14:19

In a remarkable achievement for maritime navigation, the diesel-electric ice-class container ship Zapolarniy, operated by MMC Norilsk Nickel, reached its destination in Shanghai, according to an announcement made by the company on Tuesday. The vessel, carrying an impressive 9,000 tons of copper and nickel from Norilsk Nickel's Arctic Division, departed from Murmansk port on September 12 and made a pit stop at Dudinka port on September 17. The Zapolarniy resumed its journey across the Northern Sea Route on September 21, navigating the challenging waters without the assistance of an icebreaker, a significant milestone for the company. Alexei Tyukavin, the director of Norilsk Nickel's Murmansk transport branch, highlighted that this marked the second successful voyage for Norilsk Nickel's vessels along the NSR without the need for icebreaker support. The first was the MV Monchegorsk in 2010, which also successfully traversed the Northeast Passage without escort and reached its destination in Asia. Upon arrival in Shanghai, the Zapolarniy is scheduled for a comprehensive inspection by the Russian Maritime Register of Shipping (RMRS). As part of its return journey in November, the vessel is set to transport essential maintenance supplies, equipment, and consumer goods to the residents of the Norilsk industrial region, further integrating its role in supporting the local economy.
