Record-Setting Anchor-Handling Achievement by Zwerver II
On March 23, 2017, the multipurpose DP2 workboat and support vessel ‘Zwerver II’ achieved a significant milestone in the maritime industry by executing what is reported to be the deepest anchor-handling operation for a workboat of its kind. This remarkable vessel was constructed by Scheepswerf Gebr. Kooiman BV, located in Zwijndrecht, Netherlands, and is operated by HvS Dredging Support BV from Harlingen. Recently, Zwerver II was chartered by J. Ray McDermott to provide operational support to the pipelay barge Derrick Barge 30 at the ONGC Vashista project, situated off the east coast of India. During its deep-water tasks, Zwerver II successfully handled anchors in a challenging water depth of 240 meters. Darron J. Smith, marine superintendent at McDermott International, noted, 'To my knowledge, this anchor handling represents the deepest any multicat has ever accomplished, and we were thoroughly impressed with Zwerver's capabilities.' The anchor-handling setup included a robust 2.5-inch anchor cable, a 15-ton Delta Flipper anchor, a 350-meter long 2.5-inch pennant, and a 12-tonne steel can anchor buoy. For further details, Zwerver II was highlighted in the June 2016 edition of MJ.
