On September 10, 2014, the U.S. Coast Guard successfully conducted a medevac operation for a 55-year-old man aboard the vessel 'Lowlands Maine', located approximately 115 miles south of Dutch Harbor. The incident was triggered when the ship’s agent contacted the Coast Guard 17th District command center in Juneau on September 9, reporting that the mariner suffered a serious hand injury while working in the engine room and urgently needed medical attention. After assessing the situation, the duty flight surgeon advised that a medevac was necessary due to concerns of potential infection once the vessel reached a suitable range. Promptly responding to the call, a crew from Coast Guard Air Station Kodiak, utilizing an MH-65 Dolphin helicopter and deployed from Coast Guard Cutter Alex Haley, successfully hoisted the injured mariner and transported him to Dutch Harbor for further medical care.
