On September 22, 2020, the Australian Maritime Safety Authority (AMSA) imposed a ban on the bulk carrier 'AC Sesoda' from docking at any Australian ports after discovering it had deliberately underpaid its crew by over AUD $118,000. This decision follows an investigation initiated when AMSA inspectors boarded the vessel at Mourilyan on September 17 amid allegations of wage discrepancies. During this inquiry, it was revealed that multiple crew members had received only half of their entitled wages since October 2019. The ship’s captain and its Taiwanese operator, Sincere Industrial Corporation, attempted to mislead the inspectors by providing falsified wage records. In response to the findings, AMSA detained the vessel and mandated that the operator fulfill the owed wages. Subsequent to this, the authority received confirmation that the crew had been compensated for the outstanding amounts, and a rectification plan was developed by Sincere Industrial. While the ship was released from detainment, it was subsequently issued a 12-month ban from entering Australian waters. This incident marked the fourth ship banned by AMSA in one year for significant violations of the Maritime Labour Convention, with collective underpayment on these vessels totaling over AUD $290,000, all of which was recovered through AMSA’s intervention.
