Madras High Court Clears MV Prabhu Daya for Departure After Settlement in Fatal Collision Case
In a significant turn of events, the Madras High Court has lifted the arrest order on the Singapore-bound vessel MV Prabhu Daya, which has been linked to a fatal collision with a fishing trawler off the Kerala coast last month that resulted in the tragic loss of five fishermen's lives. A month ago, the court initially ordered the vessel's detention following the incident. During the latest hearing, Justice R. Subbiah acknowledged a settlement agreement totaling Rs 1.04 crore between the ship owner, Puni Gopal Shipping Private Ltd, based in Singapore, and the claimants, which include the trawler's owner and the injured crew members. The agreement specifies compensation for the victims: Jacob Antony, the trawler owner, is to receive Rs 55 lakh; injured crew members Joseph and Michael will each receive Rs 12 lakh; and Helen, the widow of deceased Deckhand Babichan, is allocated Rs 25 lakh. With this settlement in place, the court has authorized MV Prabhu Daya to resume its journey from Chennai port.
