On September 23, 2025, the German-operated tanker 'Adiyaman' was detained in the port of Heraklio due to a staggering 17 deficiencies classified as serious safety concerns. The deficiencies identified include critical issues such as malfunctioning machinery controls alarms, impaired fire safety systems, and inadequate life-saving appliances. Key concerns noted were: 1) Malfunctioning alarms for machinery controls, 2) Fire doors and openings in fire-resistant divisions failing to operate correctly, 3) Inadequate personal fire safety equipment, 4) Non-compliance of fixed fire extinguishing installations, 5) An incomplete muster list for emergency systems, 6) Insufficient control over abandon ship drills, 7) Lack of oversight during fire drills, 8) Poor maintenance of ventilators and air pipe casings, 9) Non-compliant immersion suits, 10) Damaged fire systems on lifeboats, 11) Substandard maintenance conditions in the galley and handling room, 12) Cleanliness and temperature issues in the cold room, 13) Unacceptable conditions of auxiliary machinery, 14) Improper garbage handling on board, 15) Malfunctions in the Ballast Water Management System, 16) Non-compliance of voyage data recorders, and 17) Failures related to the International Safety Management (ISM) certificate requirements. The vessel was eventually released on October 15, 2025, and set sail towards Yalova, with an estimated time of arrival (ETA) on October 18, marking another chapter in the ongoing operational challenges faced by this tanker. Previously, the 'Adiyaman' was detained on June 24 in Rhodes for six days due to six deficiencies. This recent detention raises concerns regarding vessel safety practices and regulatory compliance in maritime operations.
