Heroic Rescue at Sea: Adler Express Saves Kite Surfer in Distress
On September 23, 2020, a dramatic rescue unfolded off the coast of St. Peter Ording when the ferry 'Adler Express' successfully retrieved one of two kite surfers caught in perilous conditions. The surfers were initially attempting to navigate their way towards the Sylt islands when they encountered unexpectedly weak winds near Amrum, leading them to be swept away by powerful currents. One of the surfers managed to reach the safety of Kniepsand off Wittdün, where he received prompt medical assistance from the local fire brigade. Meanwhile, the absence of the second surfer prompted a coordinated search effort by rescue teams. The German Maritime Search and Rescue Service (DGzRS) deployed the lifeboat 'Ernst Meider-Hedde' accompanied by two helicopters to scour the area. Captain Gerrit Vöge of the 'Adler Express' also made a valiant decision to divert the ferry’s course in an attempt to locate the missing kite surfer. The ferry crew, along with concerned passengers, began a lookout for the individual. Their efforts bore fruit when they successfully found him, initiating the Safety Management protocol. The surfer was brought aboard the ferry via the bow ramp, along with his board. Following the rescue, he was safely transported to Sylt, arriving by 6 p.m. As a result of this successful operation, other emergency services were stood down, celebrating a triumphant conclusion to an intense day at sea.
Adler Express Ferry Taken Out of Service for Repairs Following Gearbox Malfunction
On August 7, 2018, at 11:40 p.m., the ferry 'Adler Express' was docked at Husumer Yard in Husum due to a gearbox malfunction requiring urgent repairs. The vessel is anticipated to remain out of service for approximately one week as technicians work diligently to resolve the issue. In light of this setback, the operating company has adjusted its sailing schedule, with the 'Adler VI' and 'Adler IV' stepping in to maintain service. Additionally, the 'Liinsand' has been chartered to facilitate transport between the mainland and the popular islands of Amrum, Hooge, Föhr, and Sylt. Unfortunately, some ferry services from Hörnum have had to be canceled during this disruption. Passengers are advised to stay updated on schedule changes and alternative arrangements.
Adler Express Returns to Service Following Successful Repairs
The passenger ferry 'Adler Express' is set to make its much-anticipated return to service on August 1, following extensive repairs to address the grounding damage it sustained on July 11. During the downtime, the vessels 'Adler IV' and 'Adler V' operated on an emergency schedule, providing vital connections between Nordstrand, Hooge, Amrum, and Sylt. The repair process in Husum involved significant work, including the replacement of frames in a 30-square-meter area of the hull, a task that proved to be more complex and time-consuming than initially anticipated. The ferry was successfully placed back in the water on July 30, after which it underwent inspection by German Lloyd. A day later, on July 31 at 10:40 a.m., 'Adler Express' departed Husum, heading back to Nordstrand, marking the conclusion of its repair period and the resumption of regular service for passengers.
