In a show of maritime vigilance, the Royal Netherlands Navy recently conducted four escort missions for Russian vessels transiting through the Dutch sector of the North Sea. The notable first escort involved the Russian 'research vessel' Yantar, widely recognized for its espionage activities. Intelligence agencies have raised alarms about Russian efforts to map crucial undersea cables and pipelines in this major body of water. On the afternoon of November 4, the Dutch naval ships HNLMS 'Snellius' and HNLMS 'Friesland' escorted the Yantar as it departed from the Dutch waters. Following this, the week progressed with further escorts, including the oil tanker 'Yelnya' (IMO: 6813095) and the frigate 'Stoiky', emphasizing the heightened awareness and precautionary measures being taken. On November 9, another key escort involved the 'Akademik Federov', which was traveling from the Russian port of St. Petersburg to Cape Town, with an estimated time of arrival by November 30. This escort was provided by the naval ship DSS 'Galatea', signifying continued vigilance in the area. Post-escort duties were seamlessly handed over to NATO allies, demonstrating strong cooperative defense efforts in the face of potential threats. Concurrently, the Dutch naval vessel HNLMS 'Van Amstel' was engaged in anti-submarine warfare drills in the Baltic Sea, working alongside NATO partners, including a German and a Swedish submarine designated as the 'enemy'. This operation is part of the broader 'Merlin 25' exercise, where multiple naval and aerial units prepare to counter submarine threats both beneath the waters and from the skies. Commanded by Arjen Warnaar, the HNLMS 'Van Amstel' is collaborating with other participating forces, such as a German frigate and a French corvette, alongside three helicopters. This exercise, led by the Swedish Navy and supported by NATO Naval Command, showcases the alliance's readiness to defend the Baltic Sea region from various maritime threats, including potentially hostile actions from the Russian fleet.
