Seismic Vessel Fire Mitigated by Swift Response, No Major Injuries Reported
On Sunday night, emergency response teams raced to the scene of a fire on the Russian seismic vessel Akademik Lazarev, located 70 nautical miles northwest of Ørlandet in Sør-Trøndelag. The vessel, which was carrying 40 crew members, prompted an immediate response, including two Sea King helicopters from Ørlandet and Florø, along with rescue crews from Vigra and Heidrun. Additional vessels in the region also diverted to assist in the firefighting efforts. The blaze was brought under control shortly after midnight, as reported by Norwegian Broadcasting (NRK). Fortunately, there were no serious injuries reported, despite the challenging conditions at sea, which included gale-force winds and towering waves of up to six meters. Ola Waage from the Sola rescue center shared with NRK that the Akademik Lazarev sustained some damage, with the bridge possibly compromised and several cabins affected by fire. This seismic vessel, constructed in 1987, operates under the Russian flag and is owned by a seismic company based in Murmansk. Waage noted that the incident's outcome was far better than anticipated, and efforts were underway to dispatch a tugboat from Kristiansund on Monday morning to tow the vessel for repairs.
