On May 28, 2023, at 8:30 p.m., a heartbreaking situation unfolded in Table Bay when the National Sea Rescue Institute (NSRI) Table Bay volunteer crew received an urgent call for help from the Transnet National Ports Authority. The vessel 'Strategic Encounter,' traveling from Durban to Argentina, reported that a 28-year-old crew member was experiencing severe respiratory distress, suspected to be due to an asthma attack. In response to this distress signal, the NSRI Table Bay team quickly mobilized, launching the lifeboat 'Spirit of Vodacom' alongside Western Cape Government Health EMS rescue paramedics. Upon reaching the location approximately five nautical miles offshore, an NSRI crew member and an EMS paramedic were transferred aboard the 'Strategic Encounter' to attend to the ill crewman. Tragically, the crewman, who is believed to be from Myanmar, could not be revived and was pronounced deceased on the vessel.
