US Coast Guard Conducts Crucial Medevac Near Cold Bay
On April 30, 2020, the United States Coast Guard executed a vital medical evacuation of a crew member from the tanker 'Alaskan Navigator', located approximately 170 miles southwest of Cold Bay. The incident began on April 29 when watchstanders at the 17th District command center in Juneau received an emergency request around 1 p.m. A 61-year-old man aboard the vessel was experiencing severe abdominal pain as the tanker was traveling from Valdez to China, approximately 270 miles southwest of Unalaska. In response to the emergency, the Coast Guard directed the 'Alaskan Navigator' to alter its course to facilitate a helicopter rendezvous. The aircrew, launched from Kodiak, first landed in Cold Bay to refuel before making the medevac attempt at first light on April 30. They successfully hoisted the stricken crew member around 8 a.m. and transported him to Cold Bay, where he was quickly handed over to a waiting LifeMed aircraft team for further medical care. At the time of the operation, weather conditions were reported to be partly cloudy with winds reaching up to 20 miles per hour.
