On April 22, 2013, IHC Merwede proudly handed over the ALBERTO ALEMÁN ZUBIETA to the Autoridad del Canal de Panama (ACP) during a ceremony in Panama City. The transfer was officiated by ACP's Contracting Officer, Mrs. Regina Donelson, following a successful trial run that lasted 30 uninterrupted days in the Panama Canal, as confirmed by the equipment manufacturer in a press release. This state-of-the-art backhoe dredger has been meticulously designed and constructed utilizing the latest advancements in technology. The ALBERTO ALEMÁN ZUBIETA will play a pivotal role in both the expansion and ongoing maintenance efforts of the Panama Canal. Designed specifically for operations within the challenging environment of the Canal's Gaillard Cut, this vessel is equipped to effectively dredge blasted rock and heavy soil, supporting the Canal's vital infrastructure.
