Tragic Incident: Crew Member Falls Overboard from Tanker Alfa Baltica
On April 5, 2026, a tragic event unfolded when the oil tanker 'Alfa Baltica' lost a crew member overboard while navigating the turbulent waters southwest of Stavanger amid storm Dave. Search efforts commenced shortly after the incident, which occurred at approximately 4 p.m., culminating in the presumption of the crew member's death at 7:40 p.m. The unfortunate individual was not wearing a life jacket at the time of the accident. Following a thorough three-hour search, the South-West Police District, after consulting medical professionals, decided to conclude the operation based on the grim assessment that survival was unlikely. The tanker, which was en route from the Mongstad oil refinery to Lithuania, sent out a Mayday at 4:02 p.m. to initiate rescue efforts. A rescue helicopter from the 330 Squadron, along with a private helicopter provided by Equinor, scoured the area for several hours, while a Dutch naval helicopter stood ready to assist. Additionally, the Norwegian offshore supply vessel 'Havila Phoenix' (IMO 9407990), which was in the vicinity, altered its course to join the search and arrived at the scene within an hour. Although the Norwegian Coastguard's patrol ship KV 'Bergen' (IMO 9389368) was set to lend its support, it faced challenging sailing conditions several hours away from the incident zone. The search operation took place approximately 45 kilometers from land, in conditions that proved treacherous for both searchers and the vessel involved. By 6:30 p.m., the helicopters were directed back to shore as the search was officially called off.
