Recovering Crew: 22 Sailors from 'Alicia' Show Progress After COVID-19 Diagnosis

Jun 11, 2020 12:13

The 22 crew members aboard the 'Alicia,' who were confirmed positive for the SARS-CoV-2 virus after returning to Cuba from Mexico on June 4, are currently experiencing stable clinical conditions at the Mario Muñoz Monroy Military Hospital in Matanza Bay. Among them, four individuals have shown mild respiratory symptoms and are receiving minimal doses of antibiotics. One patient, aged 58, who has a history of diabetes mellitus, is being effectively managed with appropriate medication. Initially, the crew exhibited signs of emotional distress, including anxiety and apprehension. However, the intervention by specialized psychology and psychiatry professionals has significantly aided in restoring their calm and confidence levels. The hospital has implemented enhanced biosecurity measures and adhered strictly to established protocols for managing such health situations. Meanwhile, the seven crew members who tested negative for SARS-CoV-2 are currently in an isolation facility located in Unión de Reyes. Due to the elevated risk of transmission, they will undergo retesting in seven days, although none are displaying any symptoms related to the pandemic at this time.

Cuban Crew Members Recover from Covid-19 in Matanzas Hospital

Jun 08, 2020 12:07

A group of 22 Cuban crew members who tested positive for Covid-19 are on the mend at the Mario Muñoz Monroy hospital in Matanzas, with no serious complications reported. These crew members were aboard a tanker that recently docked in Matanzas after arriving from Mexico. The local health officials had been on alert since June 2, 2020, when initial Covid-19 cases were flagged on the island. Strict health protocols were enforced during the vessel's arrival in the bay to ensure the safety of both the crew and the local population. On June 4 at 11 a.m., a pilot boarded the vessel while donning full sanitary gear, including a protective suit and gloves, and spent nearly four hours aboard. The captain of the vessel, who was also battling Covid-19, provided the pilot with a portable communication kit to assist with the docking process. Following their disembarkation, the crew was swiftly transferred to the isolation facility at Mario Muñoz Monroy hospital, where they received care from health professionals, including experts from the Pedro Kourí Institute of Tropical Medicine (IPK), for thorough testing and monitoring.
