Mercator Lines (Singapore) Sells Mortgaged Bulk Carriers to Alleviate Debt

Dec 28, 2015 09:40

Mercator Lines (Singapore) Limited, a prominent player in the bulk shipping sector, has made the difficult decision to sell three of its mortgaged bulk carriers: Kesari Prem, Gauri Prem, and Sri Prem Aparna. The Singapore-based shipping company revealed that the sales were prompted by a notice of enforcement from an undisclosed mortgage lender, compelling the firm to act in order to manage its mounting financial obligations. In response to this situation, Mercator entered into separate agreements to sell the vessels to affiliated firms of the lender, ensuring that transactions were conducted on an arms-length basis. The bulk carriers were sold at market value, generating a profit of $14.8 million, which will be utilized to settle Mercator's debts with its financial backers.
