Historic Coal Shipment Marks New Era for Beira Port

Sep 15, 2011 09:08

On September 14, 2011, Beira port witnessed a significant milestone with the inaugural dispatch of coal extracted from the Moatize coal mines located in Tete Province. This shipment consisted of 35,000 tonnes of thermal coal, marking the first coal transport using the Sena Railway in nearly three decades, spanning a length of 575 kilometers. The coal was loaded onto the vessel 'Orion Express,' symbolizing the conclusion of the initial phase of Vale’s extensive Moatize Coal Mine project, to which the company has committed an investment of US$1.658 billion. Each day, between 5,000 and 6,000 tons of coal were transported using trucks and barges, a temporary measure necessitated by delays in the refurbishment of the aging bulk minerals facility at berth 8. This refurbishment, funded by Vale and Riversdale and expected to be completed by November, will introduce a conveyor belt system, significantly enhancing the efficiency of coal loading operations at the port.
