Working Conditions Aboard the Aquamarine-Ace

On April 4, 2012, the vessel "Aquamarine Ace" played a crucial role in rescuing a French sailor who was navigating his single-handed racing yacht amid severe gale conditions, approximately 26 miles south of the picturesque Isles of Scilly. At around 4:00 p.m., Falmouth Coastguard was notified of the dire situation after receiving an urgent VHF digital selective calling (DSC) alert from the yacht "Betelgeuse." Thanks to the sailor's DSC connection and GPS transponder, coastguards quickly pinpointed the yacht's exact location and issued a call for assistance to nearby vessels. Promptly responding to the distress call, the "Aquamarine Ace" made its way to the beleaguered yacht, which was facing challenging conditions half an hour away. The solo sailor had lost his mast, making long-distance communication increasingly difficult. The crew of the "Aquamarine Ace" not only provided a safe harbor from the rough seas but also relayed vital information between the yacht and the Falmouth Coastguard. In parallel, Falmouth Coastguard initiated a response by dispatching the St Mary’s RNLI lifeboat, which was facing its own hurdles due to the inclement weather and five-meter swells. When the lifeboat finally arrived on the scene, the sailor was successfully rescued and transported back to St Mary’s in the Isles of Scilly, although the yacht itself had to be abandoned due to the stormy conditions.
