Aquinnah's Maiden Voyage Hits Snag with Plumbing Issues

Jun 24, 2025 11:05

Just a day after its inaugural journey, the MV Aquinnah encountered unexpected challenges that forced the cancellation of multiple trips on the Vineyard route on June 22, 2025. The disruption stemmed from a malfunctioning plumbing system which affected the ship's women's and ADA restrooms. This was primarily caused by a plumbing configuration issue aggravated by non-flushable items, such as paper towels, causing significant drainage problems. As a result, four scheduled sailings were called off to address these plumbing complications. In response to the cancellations, the Steamship Company quickly implemented a contingency plan, rerouting passengers with vehicle reservations to other vessels where space was available. To further facilitate this, new bookings for June 22 were temporarily suspended to ensure displaced passengers could be accommodated. The fallout from the plumbing issues continued into June 23, resulting in additional delays during vehicle loading. The MV Aquinnah had just joined the Steamship fleet on June 21, bringing excitement for its operational debut. Sadly, this incident followed another recent setback involving the new freighter MV Barnstable, which had previously missed its inaugural trip on the Nantucket route earlier this year. The Steamship Company had to make necessary repairs, including installing a block heater for the engine system. Looking ahead, the final cargo ferry, the MV Monomoy, is set to undergo its stability test on August 20, marking a critical step before it embarks on its sea trial.
