Ice Condor: Landmark Arrival of First Arctic Crude Tanker at Murmansk’s RPK Nord Terminal

Jan 30, 2016 12:38

On January 28, 2016, the Malta-flagged tanker Ice Condor made history by docking at the RPK Nord offshore terminal located in the port city of Murmansk. This prestigious vessel marks the first to carry a shipment of Arctic crude oil extracted from the Novoportovskoye field. According to the Murmansk Port Authority, Ice Condor is set to transfer approximately 16,200 tonnes of this premium crude to the offshore storage and offloading facility at RPK Nord. The cargo represents a significant milestone for Gazprom Neft, as it is the inaugural shipment from the Yamal Peninsula's Novoportovskoye field, transported through the marine terminal known as Novy Port in the Gulf of Ob. Once the oil is accumulated aboard the RPK Nord tanker, it will be prepared for transshipment onto larger vessels for global export. Earlier reports from IAA PortNews indicated that another key player, the 300,259 dwt storage tanker Umba, was anchored at RPK Nord's offshore anchorage on January 15, 2016. This floating storage vessel is designated for the transshipment of Gazprom Neft's Arctic export oil from both the Novoportovskoye gas condensate field and the Prirazlomnaya site. The RPK Nord offshore transshipment terminal is projected to handle an impressive 12 million tonnes of oil annually, positioning itself as a pivotal hub for Arctic oil exports.
