The maritime saga involving the tanker 'Leon Zeus' has taken a positive turn as the vessel, which had been stranded off the coast of Greece for nearly a month, has resumed operations. After facing mechanical challenges on February 20, the 'Leon Zeus' was towed to a secure mooring near Kalamata. The unloading of its substantial cargo of 30,000 tons of gas oil products commenced on March 16, as the tanker transferred its load onto the 'Amphitrite'. On February 21, 2020, the tanker 'Leon Zeus', carrying a crew of 23, encountered a mechanical failure while navigating the southern Peloponnes region, approximately nine miles southeast of Tinaros. Promptly, the vessel alerted the Kalamata and Gythio Port Authority around noon of the same day. To ensure the safety of the crew and the vessel, the 'Leon Zeus' was towed to Kalamata by the tugboat 'Vernikos Sifnos'. The operation successfully placed the tanker at anchor on February 23 at 8:30 a.m., coordinates 37° 0.21' N 022° 3.53' E. Following its arrival, the ship was prohibited from setting sail until necessary repairs were completed and a seaworthiness certificate was obtained from the ship's registrar. At the time of the incident, the 'Leon Zeus' was transporting 32,000 tons of gas oil, having departed from Tuapse and headed for Tarragona.

On June 8, 2014, a heartbreaking rescue operation off the Sicilian coast turned deadly when an overloaded rubber dinghy capsized, leading to the loss of at least three migrant lives. The incident unfolded as the dinghy approached the rescue ship, the 'Norient Star.' In a moment of chaos, as some migrants began to board the vessel, the dinghy overturned. Despite wearing life jackets, panic ensued, and several individuals found themselves trapped beneath the capsizing vessel. The dinghy was carrying around 100 central African migrants, who had embarked on their perilous journey from Libya, seeking refuge and safety.
