On the evening of March 24, 2018, the bulk carrier 'Aseem' collided with the anchored Very Large Crude Carrier (VLCC) 'Shinyo Ocean' while navigating Fujairah Anchorage in the Gulf of Oman. The incident occurred around 8 p.m. as the 'Aseem' was en route to Qatargas' Ras Laffan terminal from Dahej, sailing in ballast condition. The collision resulted in significant damage to both vessels; the 'Shinyo Ocean' experienced a substantial breach in its port side hull, compromising its integrity both above and below the waterline. Meanwhile, the 'Aseem' sustained considerable damage to its bow and subsequently dropped anchor following the accident. After the incident, the 'Shinyo Ocean' was relocated to another mooring position and remained stationary on March 26 at coordinates 25° 12.88' N, 056° 27.19' E. Having been anchored at Fujairah since March 16, the 'Shinyo Ocean' became the focal point of an investigation by UAE authorities into how the 'Aseem,' traveling at a speed of 8 knots, made such a direct approach to the VLCC under the cover of darkness.
