In a concerning incident, the cargo vessel 'Sun Ray', traveling from Dubai to St. Petersburg, Russia, suffered a significant cargo loss likely on January 6, 2025. The mishap occurred approximately 82 kilometers west of Texel, within the deep-water navigation route. As observed during a routine patrol by the Dutch Coastguard on January 16, a structural damage was documented on the ship. In response to this incident, the Dutch Coast Guard collaborated with Rijkswaterstaat to devise a focused search strategy to recover the lost cargo. Utilizing the research vessel 'Zirfaea' alongside the naval vessel Zr.Ms. 'Schiedam', teams equipped with specialized gear scoured the seabed in the designated search area. Their efforts resulted in the discovery of 14 different objects, including gears and a cog radar. The Coast Guard has alerted the maritime community about these findings through navigation alerts and has established a virtual buoy to ensure the area remains marked. Rijkswaterstaat is currently evaluating the feasibility of salvaging the items.
