Selsey Lifeboat Successfully Assists Fishing Vessel in Distress
On January 5, 2026, the Selsey Lifeboat undertook its inaugural mission of the year when the UK Coastguard received multiple Mayday DSC (Digital Selective Calling) alerts. The distress signal originated from a fishing vessel located approximately 16 nautical miles south of Selsey Bill. Earlier in the day, the fishing boat had reached out to the Coastguard to report a complete electrical failure while navigating near busy shipping lanes. In response, the Coastguard disseminated a Securite message to notify nearby vessels of the fishing vessel’s location. However, the situation worsened as the fishing vessel's primary radio lost power, and attempts to communicate using a handheld radio proved inadequate. Faced with the dire circumstances, the vessel's skipper activated the DSC alarm for immediate assistance. The Selsey Shannon-class all-weather lifeboat (ALB) was launched at 10:06 p.m., racing to the area to provide aid. The Coastguard simultaneously requested additional support, including the Bembridge ALB and Coastguard Helicopter Rescue 375, due to uncertainty regarding the source of the distress call. In a timely response, the cargo ship 'Askholmen,' en route from IJmuiden to Eastham, was the first to make contact with the fishing vessel. Rescue 375 arrived on the scene at 10:35 p.m., followed closely by the Selsey ALB at 10:49 p.m. Upon arrival, the Selsey crew confirmed the safety of all individuals onboard the fishing vessel and relayed the Maritime Mobile Service Identity (MMSI) number to the Coastguard. With the information confirming that only one vessel was in distress, the Coastguard stood down both Rescue 375 and the Bembridge ALB. At 10:59 p.m., a towing line was established to guide the fishing vessel towards the entrance of Chichester Harbour, situated 20 nautical miles to the northeast. Conditions at sea were favorable, with winds from the north at force 2-3, smooth seas, and good visibility. Upon reaching the harbour, the tow was adjusted for an easier passage to Itchenor, where the fishing vessel was safely berthed by 3:35 a.m. on January 6. The Selsey ALB returned to station at 4:43 a.m., promptly completing their recovery operations.
