On November 15, 2014, the groundbreaking chemical tanker 'Sunrise Hope' was delivered to Hiro Naviera S.A., marking a significant milestone in maritime engineering. Built by Usuki Shipyard Co., Ltd., this vessel is the world's first chemical tanker constructed using a unique combination of duplex stainless steel and stainless clad steel in its cargo tanks. This innovative design is a result of an extensive joint research initiative that brought together steel manufacturers, leading universities, and ship designers, supported by ClassNK, an esteemed maritime classification society led by Chairman and President Noboru Ueda. The 12,500 MT vessel will be operated by Nippon Marine Co., Ltd., under the leadership of President Shinichi Igata. The eco-friendly design of Sunrise Hope features 14 cargo tanks that utilize advanced duplex stainless steel technology, adhering to ClassNK’s Guidelines on Welding of Duplex Stainless Steels, first released in January 2014. This delivery highlights a new era in the construction of specialized maritime vessels, combining sustainability with cutting-edge materials.
