Coast Guard Executes Successful Medevac off Galveston for Injured Crew Member
On March 14, 2022, the United States Coast Guard carried out a crucial medevac operation for a crew member aboard the 'Athina M' tanker, located approximately 200 miles offshore from Galveston, Texas. The emergency call was received by the Coast Guard’s District Eight command center watchstanders at 1:01 p.m. on March 13, following reports of a serious finger injury sustained by a 26-year-old crew member. Given the vessel's offshore position, the situation was assessed by the duty flight surgeon, who advised delaying the medevac until the following morning when conditions would allow for a safer operation closer to shore. At 8:18 a.m. the next day, an Air Station Houston MH-65 Dolphin helicopter crew was dispatched to perform the medevac. The helicopter team successfully met the 'Athina M' in the Galveston Fairway anchorage, where they hoisted the injured crew member and flew him safely to the University of Texas Medical Branch in Galveston, where he was reported to be in stable condition. This operation highlights the Coast Guard's commitment to ensuring the safety and well-being of those at sea.
