Working Conditions Aboard the Atlantida

On May 10, 2025, the research vessel 'Atlântida' encountered gunfire while operating offshore of Cabo Delgado, situated in northern Mozambique. This incident, confirmed by a source from the Russian Embassy in Maputo, highlights the ongoing threats posed by insurgent groups in the region. The vessel was engaged in marine research activities and was en route back to Maputo port when the attack occurred around 3 p.m. local time. The assailants, traveling in two unidentified boats, opened fire from a distance of over three miles from the island of Tambuzi, part of the Quirimbas archipelago. Fortunately, the 'Atlântida' managed to escape unharmed by maneuvering toward deeper waters, avoiding any direct contact with the attackers.

On the evening of June 22, 2024, a significant fire erupted aboard the 'Atlantida' at a ship repair yard in the bustling port of Svetly, located in the Kaliningrad region. While undergoing repairs in a dry dock, the vessel caught fire, leading to flames that extended over a 180 square meter area. In a coordinated effort, the Russian Ministry of Emergency Situations deployed an initial team of 43 firefighters, which quickly grew to 72, to contain the dangerous situation. Their swift actions were critical in preventing a catastrophe by ensuring the safety of 24 gas cylinders situated onboard, which posed a serious risk of explosion.
