Stena Bulk Expands Fleet with Investment in Six Chemical Tankers
In a strategic move to bolster its maritime operations, Stena Bulk, together with Stena Weco and Golden Agri-Resources (GAR), has announced an investment in six new chemical tankers. This initiative, under the joint venture known as Golden Stena Weco, aims to strengthen its commercial management capabilities. With a combined investment totaling approximately USD 100 million, this acquisition is designed to equip Golden Stena Weco with the essential resources necessary to satisfy its transportation demands while ensuring operational profitability despite prevailing low market conditions. The newly acquired tankers, each boasting a deadweight capacity of 17,000 tons, were constructed at the renowned Samho Shipbuilding shipyard in South Korea between 2008 and 2009. The vessels have been aptly named GSW Forward, GSW Fabulous, GSW Frontier, GSW Fortune, GSW Future, and GSW Fighter, joining the ranks of the existing fleet that includes the Golden Avenue and her sister vessel, Golden Adventure. Erik Hånell, President and CEO of Stena Bulk and Stena Weco, commented on the investment, stating, 'With the new investment in this segment, we are entering a new chapter in our collaboration with Golden Agri-Resources. These tankers will transport chemicals and vegetable oils on an international basis.' This expansion is expected to greatly enhance the operational capabilities and market reach of the joint venture.
AULAC SIRIUS Avoids Collision at Port of Patra
On May 13, 2010, at precisely 13:57, the AULAC SIRIUS, registered under IMO number 9421271, commenced her entry into the bustling Port of Patra. The maneuver was expertly supported by two tugs, the AMAZON at the bow and HERMES at the stern, along with a skilled pilot at the helm. Thanks to the swift actions of the tug crews, the vessel narrowly evaded a head-on collision at the dock. The AMAZON pulled full starboard while HERMES went full aft, and a rapid deployment of the port bow anchor aided in averting a potential disaster. For a glimpse of the critical moment, see the accompanying photo.
