A tragic incident occurred in the early hours of September 29, 2016, when a 47-year-old fitter lost his life after falling from the tanker "Nord Gardenia," approximately five kilometers east of Skagen. The accident happened at 2 a.m. while the man was being transported to the vessel via a pilot boat for necessary repairs. During the boarding process, he unexpectedly fell into the water, prompting an immediate rescue operation. After approximately 10 minutes, he was successfully retrieved but later succumbed to his injuries. The fitter was airlifted to Aalborg University Hospital, where he was pronounced dead upon arrival. At the time of the accident, the "Nord Gardenia" was anchored in Skagen Anchorage, en route from St. Petersburg to Bremen. In response to this tragic event, the Maritime Accident Investigation Board has launched a thorough investigation into the circumstances surrounding the incident.

The vessel answered a distress call after a migrant boat, carrying 112 men, 14 women, and a child, encountered perilous conditions shortly after departing Libya. In the afternoon, 'Nord Gardenia' received instructions from the Italian Maritime Rescue Coordination Centre to prepare for a rescue operation.
