Working Conditions Aboard the Baker-Spirit

In a remarkable twist of fate, the tanker 'Baker Spirit' successfully located and rescued American ocean rower Aaron Carotta after he spent two harrowing weeks adrift in the South Pacific. Carotta, who had embarked on a daring solo voyage around the globe from South America, encountered dire circumstances at the end of May when a large wave capsized his rowing vessel, 'Smiles.' Following the incident, he sent out a distress signal before losing communication with rescue teams. Although an extensive search involving five merchant vessels and four recreational boats was initiated, efforts to locate Carotta were officially called off on June 12. However, hope was reignited when another distress signal was detected from the 'Smiles.' During this time, a U.S. aircraft conducting a separate search operation in the vicinity spotted Carotta’s overturned boat adrift east of the Marquesas Islands, an area notorious for its low maritime traffic. Fortunately, the 'Baker Spirit' was the closest ship, approximately 390 kilometers from the rescue site. The tanker altered its course and, after an 18-hour journey, reached Carotta, bringing him to safety. As of June 25, the 'Baker Spirit' is now en route to Honolulu, marking the end of a diligent rescue operation and the beginning of Carotta's recovery.
