On November 5, 2014, the tanker "Basat," manned by a Turkish crew of 14, faced a harrowing attack by Nigerian pirates while navigating through Nigerian waters. The vessel was on its way from Douala to Abidjan when the pirates boarded, resulting in two crew members being taken hostage. Fortunately, the remaining crew members managed to find refuge in the ship's citadel. Following the incident, the pirates contacted the crewing agency based in Tuzla, demanding an initial ransom of $5 million. However, negotiations led to a significant reduction, bringing the ransom down to $500,000. In a subsequent development, the Basat reach Abidjan on November 6, where it anchored safely.
