On August 19, 2021, a heartbreaking story unfolded off the coast of Gran Canaria when the sole survivor of a tragic migrant boat incident was airlifted to safety by a search and rescue (SAR) helicopter. This survivor, a woman from the Ivory Coast, emerged from a harrowing experience as she was the only one to survive a vessel that had set off with 53 individuals onboard. The woman, visibly shaken and in a weakened state, provided crucial details about the journey, revealing that they had departed from Morocco and endured a week at sea. Her account aligned with alerts from the Caminando Fronteras organization, which had previously notified Spanish authorities about a rubber dinghy carrying 53 people that had embarked from El Aaiún, Sahara, on August 12, aiming for Fuerteventura. The grim reports indicated that 35 men, 16 women, and a child tragically lost their lives during this perilous voyage. For several days, Caminando Fronteras had been in contact with a father deeply worried for his wife and son, who were on the ill-fated journey. Unfortunately, most of the passengers were reported to be from the Ivory Coast. The search efforts led to the recovery of two bodies—a young man approximately 17 years old and a woman believed to be around 20 and possibly pregnant—around 220 kilometers off Gran Canaria, where the overturned Zodiac was discovered. The Maritime Rescue team, acting with urgency, retrieved these remains, but no additional bodies were found in the vicinity upon the arrival of the 'Evros,' a tanker en route from Conakry to Amsterdam. Following the rescue, the survivor was rushed from Gran Canaria airport to the Insular Hospital due to severe dehydration. Fortunately, she did not require intensive care and was admitted to a hospital ward, awaiting further developments in her condition.
