In a significant milestone for the Port of Port Hedland, the first conventional roll-on/roll-off (RORO) vessel made its debut, promising a more economical solution for cargo delivery in the region. The ‘Blue Ridge Highway,’ measuring 180 meters, docked on Saturday evening and departed the following morning, marking the successful culmination of 18 months of meticulous planning by the Pilbara Ports Authority, vessel owners K-Line, and cargo receivers Sumitomo. Originating from Japan, the vessel made a crucial stop at Fremantle Port before reaching Port Hedland. Aboard were 22 trailers carrying pre-assembled offshore piping, which benefited from the RORO vessel's innovative open vehicle deck design, allowing for a swift unloading process that took only about 1.5 hours. In comparison, unloading a traditional non-RORO vessel typically requires cranes and can extend up to 12 hours.
