Urgent Medevac Operation Near Durban Seaport

Oct 13, 2017 09:40

On October 12, 2017, at 15:31, the NSRI Durban duty crew sprang into action following an urgent request for medical aid from the bulk carrier "Bochem Oslo," which was anchored 10 nautical miles offshore from Durban. The vessel had reported that a 39-year-old Indian crew member was experiencing severe chest pains, prompting immediate concern for his health. To address the emergency, the NSRI deployed their rescue craft, the "Eikos Rescuer II," while two Netcare 911 paramedics were also onboard to provide medical support. Simultaneously, a Transnet National Ports Authority (TNPA) helicopter was dispatched from Richards Bay to assist in the rescue operation. Upon arrival at the NSRI Durban base, the TNPA helicopter picked up an NSRI Durban rescue swimmer along with a Netcare 911 paramedic before heading straight to the scene of the incident. The helicopter skillfully hovered over the "Bochem Oslo," where the rescue swimmer and paramedic were winched down onto the ship to render immediate assistance to the ailing crew member. After stabilizing the patient, they secured him onto a stretcher. The next critical step involved hoisting the patient, accompanied by the paramedic, back into the helicopter. The patient was then transported to a local Durban hospital, showing signs of stability, but suspected to have suffered a heart attack. Meanwhile, the NSRI Durban rescue swimmer was retrieved via a Jacobs Ladder back to the "Eikos Rescuer II," which safely returned to the base after the successful operation.
