Coast Guard Responds to Medical Emergency at Sea Near Galveston
On the morning of June 18, 2017, the United States Coast Guard executed a life-saving medevac operation approximately 120 miles southeast of Galveston, Texas. A 44-year-old crew member aboard the tanker 'Argent Eyebright' exhibited symptoms resembling those of a stroke, prompting the vessel's agent to alert the Coast Guard Sector Houston-Galveston watchstanders at 6:36 a.m. Responding swiftly, an MH-65 Dolphin helicopter from Coast Guard Air Station Houston arrived at the scene by 7:50 a.m. The aircrew successfully hoisted the man from the ship despite the considerable distance from the coast. After performing a necessary refueling stop at a nearby oil rig, the helicopter crew transported the patient to the University of Texas Medical Branch in Galveston, where he was reported to be in stable condition by 10:25 a.m. This operation underscores the vital role of the Coast Guard in ensuring maritime safety and emergency response.
Tanker Argent Eyebright Runs Aground Near Pagensand
On January 30, the tanker Argent Eyebright, en route from Nordenham and carrying palm oil, ran aground on the Elbe River just north of Stade. The vessel encountered difficulties at the island of Pagensand while traveling at approximately nine knots. A coordinated rescue operation ensued, with multiple tugs, including Bugsier 19, Bugsier 20, Fairplay 6, and Bützfleth, deployed to the scene. Additionally, the police launch Bürgermeister Weichmann provided assistance during the operation. Thankfully, by noon, the tanker was successfully refloated. As part of the recovery efforts, the tugs Bugsier 18 and Bugsier 5, which had initially proceeded to the location, turned back to assist. Following her refloating, the Argent Eyebright was escorted to Hamburg by Bugsier 19 and Bugsier 20, ultimately docking at NHG in the Neuhöfer Canal around 2 p.m. The grounding incident was attributed to a technical failure that led to the unfortunate navigational mishap, causing the ship to continue straight instead of following the river's curve.
