On April 17, 2012, while engaged in towage of an oil rig to Walvis Bay, a mismanaged towing cable prematurely loosened by the rig's crew, ensnared the starboard propeller. This unfortunate entanglement resulted in significant damage, with the transmission gear completely destroyed and the engines sustaining further impairments. After a journey filled with challenges, the "Janus" arrived at Bremerhaven on May 13, where technicians promptly removed the damaged transmission gear and prepared to install a new foundation.
