Close Call on Oude Maas: Yacht Saved from Collision
On May 11, 2020, a potentially dangerous incident unfolded on the Oude Maas near the Spijkenisser Bridge when a sailing yacht found itself incapacitated, at risk of drifting into the path of the oncoming tanker 'Team Hawk', which was en route from Dordrecht to Rotterdam. In a timely response, the tugboat 'En Avant 7', one of two assisting tugs, was permitted to detach from the tanker while it was located between Hoogvliet and Spijkenisse. The tugboat maneuvered expertly to shield the drifting yacht as the tanker passed. Following this close call, the tug successfully towed the disabled vessel to a nearby lock, averting a possible maritime disaster. Falmouth Maritime Incident: Collision Between Team Hawk and Fishing Vessel California
On December 14, 2019, at approximately 5:20 PM, a maritime accident occurred in the English Channel, south of Falmouth, involving the tanker 'Team Hawk' and the French fishing vessel 'California'. Positioned about nine miles from Lizard Point, 'Team Hawk', which was en route from Falmouth to New York, was manned by a crew of 20. The 'California', measuring 22 meters and operating with a crew of five, experienced minor damage to its upper bow during the collision. Notably, the fishing vessel was not engaged in fishing at the time and was traveling at a slow speed of five knots. Following the accident, CROSS Corsen was quick to establish communication with the 'California', which planned to return to Roscoff on December 17. The damage sustained by 'Team Hawk' was more severe, with a hole measuring approximately 50 by 100 centimeters resulting in water ingress. To manage this flooding, onboard pumps were activated to mitigate the situation. Authorities including the Duty Officer of DFT/MAIB and the Duty Surveyor, along with local Harbour and Enforcement agencies, were promptly informed of the incident. 'Team Hawk' subsequently anchored at coordinates 50 06 32 N, 005 03 00 W, roughly 2.5 miles off South Pendennis Point, where it awaited inspection the following morning.
Emergency Departure of Tankers from La Coruña Amid Severe Weather
On the morning of November 8, 2017, the Port of La Coruña experienced extreme weather conditions, forcing two tankers to make an urgent exit from their berths at the Repsol oil terminal. The 'Eagle Turin' and the 'Sichem Hawk' found themselves in a precarious situation as strong winds and heavy waves caused their mooring lines to snap one after the other. The 'Eagle Turin' was the first to evacuate the terminal after offloading a substantial 83,000 tons of crude oil. Following suit was the 'Sichem Hawk', engaged in loading diesel oil at the time. Once they departed the port, the 'Eagle Turin' maneuvered in a holding pattern just off La Coruña while the 'Sichem Hawk' relocated to the calm waters of Ria de Bentranzos Bay to anchor, patiently waiting for improved weather conditions.
