HONOLULU — In a dramatic rescue operation, the U.S. Coast Guard successfully airlifted a 37-year-old Filipino seafarer suffering from intense abdominal pain while aboard the motor vessel Bunga Kasturi Enam, located approximately 34 miles north of Oahu, on Tuesday. The evacuation took place around 6 a.m. when a skilled crew from Coast Guard Air Station Barbers Point utilized an MH-65 Dolphin helicopter to hoist the man and securely transport him to Queen’s Medical Center, where he was reported in stable condition. Earlier, at 12:28 a.m. on Friday, Coast Guard watchstanders at the Joint Rescue Coordination Center received a distress signal relayed from the Coast Guard Pacific Area command, indicating that a crew member aboard the Bunga Kasturi Enam was in significant pain. A consultation with a Coast Guard flight surgeon led to the decision for a prompt medevac as soon as the vessel was within a safe distance from the shore for the hoisting operation. “The proactive efforts of the Joint Rescue Coordination Center watch teams were crucial in managing the escalating health emergency for the crew member of the Bunga Kasturi Enam,” stated Lt. Zachary McCune, a pilot at Coast Guard Air Station Barbers Point and one of the pilots involved in the operation. “Their meticulous planning and coordination enabled us to perform a successful marine rescue and deliver the patient to essential medical care at Queen’s Medical Center in Honolulu.”
